Nourishing Postpartum Meals

Around the world, many cultures have robust postpartum traditions to encourage rest and healing. Traditional postpartum care practices focus on two key factors: warmth and nourishment.

Traditional postpartum foods come in many varieties, but they share similar qualities – bringing warmth (through both temperature and warming ingredients) to the postpartum parent and replenishing the body after the difficult work of giving birth. These foods are always served warm. They are high in vitamins, nutrient-rich, and easy to digest. According to journalist Pooja Makhijani, traditional postpartum foods “represent rest and assistance, necessary for physical and emotional healing.”

On her website Kitchen Curandera, Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz, who is a chef and an indigenous food activist, states that “a new mama’s body is cleansing, healing, and rebuilding after birth. Everything she eats during this time should be soupy, warm, and moist to gradually restore her back to full power.”

With the importance of postpartum nourishment and warmth in mind, Andaluz is excited to announce that we are partnering with local chef Heidi Liebowitz of Soupernatural to provide wholesome meals for our clients during their stay with us.

Supernatural uses locally sourced, high quality ingredients and offers soups to meet all dietary preferences and restrictions. We will offer 10 flavor options, rotating seasonally. See below for our late summer menu.

Along with a large bowl of soup, we will serve a loaf bread baked fresh just for you with a variety of spreads.
